Staff Appraisal - Some Positive Experiences
- I have had annual appraisal for three years. Each time it has been a searching discussion of what I was doing in my job and how this related to the priorities of the department.
- Each interview has set me new challenges and opened up fresh opportunities. I always left with a sense of achievement and purpose that underpinned my working life. (A senior analyst programmer)
- The boss was always well-prepared. The meetings generally summarise what we know already. There were no surprises indeed the boss always took the role of a friendly critic, encouraging me to push at issues and think of new alternatives.
- She always tried to open doors for me and help me target the essentials. After the meeting I wrote a one page resume of the objectives/tasks we had agreed and over the next few months we had lunch from time to time to discuss progress.
- Generally she was a mentor and coach rather than an appraiser - I was the appraiser. The whole process could be called 'reflective-evaluation'. (From a major insurance company)
