The Lightning - a GWR gem!
Daniel Gooch's 2.4m (8ft) single-wheelers built for GWR's 7ft guage.
Photograph published in The Guiness Railway Book by John Marshall,
Guinness, 1989.
Indeed when Albert, the Prince Consort, travelled the GWR to Bristol, Brunel and Gooch supervised the journey - from the foot plate! It was 1845. Speeds of 65 mph were achieved from Paddington to Slough - faster than the M4 today! With the broad guage track passengers were able to partake of luncheon!
