Ethics: Questions for Seminars

What are the ethical issues and dilemmas in each of the following situations?

  1. If you were determining who could immigrate to the UK, would you let in those who you think would contribute the most to the country or those most in need of refuge?

  2. Should there be a limit to the personal wealth one individual is allowed to amass? If so how much is too much? What are the implications for our economic system?

  3. You run a hospital, what policy would you set for patients with lung and heart problems who are heavy smokers?

  4. You are completing a medical questionnaire required for a job application to a big financial services firm. The form asks if you have ever smoked marijuana. Well you have and sometimes still do smoke the drug. How will you respond to the application form question?

The application form requires you to sign an affidavit declaring that you statements are true.

  5. You find a lottery ticket in the street and pick it up. It wins!

  6. You have just discovered that a good friend at work has - for years - exaggerated his car mileage when claiming his monthly expenses form.

  7. You are a carpenter. Imagine you lost your thumb at work because of your own carelessness with a power saw. if you knew you could collect £50000+ in damages - even though the accident had been your own fault - would you sue your company for damages?

What if you knew that to win the claim in court you would have to lie under oath?

  8. You were caught speeding in a police radar trap. If the policeman offered - for a £20 kick-back - not to write you an £50 speeding ticket - would you pay him? What if you had not been speeding?

  9. The owner of a local garage was caught dumping 5 gallons of used motor oil into a city drain.

What would you like his punishment to be?

What if your brother was caught doing the same with one litre of used oil.

  10. You have just discovered that a good friend at work has - for years - forged records and stolen money from the company. What would you do? What if you hardly knew the thief?

  11. If a neighbour's son (aged 14) stopped you outside a wine and spirits shop and tried to give you money to buy him a six-pack of lager, what would you do? Why?

  12. A drunken guest at a party of yours says "goodbye" and, keys in hand, heads for his car. Would you try to stop him? If so how far would you be willing to go to keep him from driving?

  13. If you bought something and broke it the next day but in such a way that you could easily claim it had been broken when you got it, would you return the item to the store?

  14. If the only way to avoid disastrous global warming were to halve our/your current consumption of energy, would you do so voluntarily or only if required to do so by law?

  15. If you had to terminate the contract of an employee, would you be more inclined to give the minimum or maximum notice possible? Why?

  16. Have your biggest professional successes resulted from following well-thought-out plans or from taking advantage of unanticipated opportunities? What are the implications of ethical behaviour?

  17. To take advantage of an investment opportunity you need a partner you can trust. Whom would you pick and what would be your selection criteria?

  18. Your business, which employees 100 people, has only a 50/50 chance of avoiding heavy losses this year and possibly going out of business.

If this gets out, your suppliers are likely to stop giving you credit and force you into bankruptcy. However if you don’t tell your employees, they might be caught unprepared and suffer hardship. Would you tell your employees the truth?

  19. Christine was involved with the implementation of a redundancy programme. This had been announced to the staff as voluntary though there was , in fact, a hidden agenda on the part of more senior management to weed out" certain members of staff.

Christine’s background in healthcare had imbued her with a very strict (and open) code of conduct. Should she go along with the hidden agenda? Should she speak out and put at risk her own job security? Should she, as a last resort, resign?

Her dilemma is compounded by a desire to implement the programme in a way which was at variance with the corporate approach but which would give some counselling support to those potentially involved.
