ISO 9000 History
The antecedents for the ISO 9000 standards are:
- 12th century hallmarking of silver
- MIL STD 9858A. The US Dept of Defence standard for quality control which led to the NATO standard (1968) and the Ministry of Defence (UK) Def.Standard 05/21 (1973)
- BS 5179 - the BSI guide to non-military quality assurance
- BS5750 issued in 1979. In the 1980's many other countries adopted quality standards based on the 5750 specification
- ISO issued ISO 9000 in 1987 building on the specification of BS 5750. A new BS5750 was issued in 1987 completely reflecting the ISO standard
- In 1987 also, CEN - the European standards body, adopted ISO 9000 as EN29000
Thus a manufacturer on Route 66 in Winslow, Arizona can have confidence in buying services from a food testing laboratory in Winslow, Buckinghamshire whose operation is ISO 9000 accredited.
