Study Skills for Effe ctive Learn ing
Principles
For learning to be learner rather than tutor-centred, the learner needs to
- take charge of learning experience rather than being spoon-fed.
- think, do, review, re-formulate, experience and go round again
- elicit feedback from peers, practitioners and tutors.

- set standards, aim for sound analysis, good presentation & achievement.
- observe everyday things/interactions and evaluate their form, content and meaning. Describe and then focus on explanation and critical evaluation. Seek underlying reasons, contributions, trends and relationships.
- practice required skills and recognise the learning curve to be climbed. Marry scholarship with practice and use IT to support learning.
- let assessment tasks support useful learning.
- understand the performance criteria others (and yourself) will use to assess learning achievements. Relate learning activities and achievements to the end-result you want.
- recognise the effort, information, thought and time requirements needed to marshal analysis, argue and present. Keep efforts focused - the reward may be a wooden spoon if not (verdict tried hard but must the target).
